But in practice, there are two different needs:
- The input single file (foo.log.bz2). You want it to be packaged in the tar.bz2 standard.
- The input may actually be "tar.bz2" but its extension/distribution may be corrupted. The tool will normalize it.
TAR + bzip2 together produce a standard stream on the GNU tar side.
What does the tool do?
- Decompresses BZ2 (single file)
- Puts the file into a TAR package
- Compresses TAR with bzip2 compressor
- Outputs: .tar.bz2
Smart TAR detection
If the decompressed file is already .tar:
- You can repackage the content mode with tar content
- or you can choose to “compress tar directly with bzip2” (the fastest way)
When is it chosen?
- If .tar.bz2 is especially expected on the Linux side
- If you want to fit a single file to the “tarball” standard
- If you are doing archiving standardization
Usage steps
- Upload BZ2
- Output: Select TAR.BZ2
- Settings:
- compression level (fast/balanced/maximum)
- TAR detection mode (if any)
- output name
- Convert > download
Settings
- Compression level: fast / balanced / maximum
- Output name: file.tar.bz2
- TAR mode: direct bzip2 / carry content
Error messages
- “Corrupted BZ2”
- “tar.bz2 could not be generated”
- “Insufficient resources / file too large” (write honestly if there is a limit)
FAQ
