What is AIFF used for?
AIFF is a format commonly seen in production and editing workflows. In practice, most AIFF files operate on a PCM basis; this means more stable import/export and a more ‘predictable’ process during editing.

What happens in the MP3 → AIFF conversion?
- MP3 is decoded (lossy content is opened to PCM)
- Written as PCM to the AIFF file. This process does not recover lost details; it only transfers the file to a more suitable carrier for editing.
When should you choose AIFF?
- Mac-centric production flow (DAWs, sound libraries)
- To take a file that will be processed repeatedly to a “lossless/PCM carrier”
- To ensure compatibility on software/device that does not accept MP3 compatibility
Recommended settings
Sample rate
Choose what is standard in your project: 44.1 kHz is common in music, while 48 kHz is more frequently seen in video work.
Bit depth
If the tool supports, it would be good to offer 16/24 bit options: 24 bit provides flexibility in production.
Channel
Mono may make sense in speech content; stereo is mostly preferred in music.
