Why is FLAC preferred?

FLAC is a codec that performs lossless compression: it compresses audio data but returns to the original PCM data exactly when decoded. Therefore, it is strong in the archiving/collection storage approach.

The hard truth: Quality does not increase when switching from MP3 to FLAC

MP3 is lossy. Converting to FLAC does not bring back the details lost in MP3. The values of conversion are:

  • Taking the file to a “lossless carrier” to reduce additional loss accumulation in subsequent processes
  • Providing compatibility if the library/device ecosystem requires FLAC

What happens during conversion?

MP3 is decoded, and the resulting PCM data is encoded as lossless in FLAC. The FLAC side is lossless; it does not compensate for the loss of the source MP3.

Settings and practical tips

FLAC compression level

The compression level affects not quality but the speed/size balance. Higher compression may make sense in archiving work, while lower levels may be more logical in fast work.

Metadata/cover

Artist/album/cover information should be preserved for archive organization.

Batch conversion

Batch is essential in collection transfer scenarios.
