PDF Redaction Tool

This tool permanently censors (redacts) sensitive information in a PDF. It does not just “put a black box over it”; the targeted content is actually removed from the PDF and made irretrievable in the output. Purpose: to share the file securely (KVKK/GDPR processes, contract sharing, customer documents, court/tender documents, financial documents).

What does it do?

• Text redaction: permanently removes selected text (name, amount, IBAN, ID number, etc.).
• Image redaction: blacks out sensitive areas in signatures, faces, plates, screenshots.
• Area redaction: censorship based on “rectangular area” such as table cells, paragraph blocks, header fields.
• Scanned PDF (OCR) support (optional): recognizes text in scanned documents with OCR, making it selectable for redaction.

Why is the emphasis on “permanent” critical?

Many people share PDFs thinking, “I drew a shape, I painted it black”; later, the other party can copy the text, remove the layer, or find the content through search. Permanent redaction ensures these two conditions:

1. Actually removes the content (does not just cover it).
2. Cleans side channels: manages leakage sources such as copyable text, comments, form fields, attachments, metadata.

Functions and details

1) Manual redaction

• Select in PDF preview:
  • Select text → “Redact”
  • Select area (rectangle) → “Redact”
• Multiple selection: mark multiple areas on the same page or different pages.
• Page-based: single page, page range, or entire document.

2) Automatic detection (smart redaction)

Optional automations:

• Pattern capture: find patterns like IBAN, email, phone, credit card, TCKN → mark → apply with user approval.
• Search and redact: search for specific words/names/terms and mark them all in one go.
• Regex (optional): rule writing for advanced users.

3) Security cleaning (for the redaction to be “complete”)

The tool offers the following cleanings to make the output secure (with optional checkboxes):

• Comment/annotation cleaning: notes, highlights, drawings.
• Form fields cleaning: fillable fields and hidden values.
• Attachments cleaning: embedded files in the PDF (if any).
• Metadata cleaning: title, author, software, XMP, etc.
• Layers/objects: ensuring no objects remain “underneath” the redacted area; if necessary, fixing the output by “flattening” it.

4) Output and report

• redacted.pdf: clean file ready for download.
• Redaction summary (optional): how many areas were censored on how many pages (for sharing/audit).
• Feedback: the original file remains unchanged; only a new output is produced.

Usage flow

1. Upload PDF
2. Select redaction method:
   • Manual selection
   • Automatic detection (IBAN/TCKN/email/phone, etc.)
3. Preview:
   • Check marked areas
   • Remove “false positives”
4. Select cleaning options (metadata, comments, form fields, etc.)
5. Apply → Download new PDF

FAQ (short and clear)

Is redaction the same as “painting over”?

No. Painting over is often reversible. Redaction is the process of removing + cleaning from the content.

I can’t select text in scanned PDFs, what will happen?

If OCR is enabled, text will be recognized; if there is no OCR, you will work with area-based (rectangle) redaction.

Can the redacted area be reopened later?

The goal of permanent redaction is this: it cannot be retrieved. Therefore, the “output PDF” is shared, while the original file is kept.
